Expected duration05 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground note and duties: Desertification, along with climate change and the loss of biodiversity were identified as the greatest challenges to sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Established in 1994, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management. The Convention seeks to support countries to address Desertification, Land Degradation, and Drought (DLDD). ( The Global Mechanism (GM) of the UNCCD is mandated to assist countries in the mobilization of financial resources from the public and private sector for activities that prevent, control or reverse desertification, land degradation and drought. As the operational arm of the convention, the GM supports countries to translate the Convention into action. The GM is currently spearheading several initiatives to implement its resource mobilization mandate by supporting countries in the development of a pipeline of projects and programmes for financing by donors and private sector partners. We are also promoting multi-sector, multi-stakeholder approaches to facilitate the financing and implementation The intern will support the team in the preparation and coordination of GM-led events for COP17, the development of COP17-related publications and communication materials, and knowledge management activities. Tasks will include: - Supporting the preparation and coordination of GM-led events at COP17, including 10th Anniversary of the Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Target Setting Programme event, Greening Drylands Partnership (GDP) event, Changwon Initiative 15th Anniversary event, Partnership for Project Preparation event etc. - Assisting in the development of event materials, including concept notes, agendas, background documents, promotional materials and event reports. - Assisting in the preparation, drafting of COP17-related publications and communication materials. - Conducting background research and compiling relevant inputs and data. - Supporting knowledge management activities. - Performing other related duties as required. Qualifications/special skills- Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme - Applicants to the UNCCD Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Languages- Fluency in English language is required. Additional InformationCandidates for the UNCCD Internship Programme are required to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship. For remote internships, the selected candidate will be required to have a laptop or desktop PC (with Windows 11 or newer) or Mac (with the latest MacOS update), as well as a reliable, high-speed internet connection. An Office 365 license will be provided by the UNCCD to enable the candidate to access official emails, SharePoint, OneDrive and other office applications, such as Word and Excel. Further computer requirements: An antivirus application which receives regular updates; Browsers must be a newer version with regular updates enabled; Regular Windows 11 updates should be enabled with Windows laptop or PC.
